HP Compaq nx6125 Power-on password = broked
Right. I just managed to essentially brick a Compaq nx6125 laptop. I went into the BIOS utility to remove the power-on password. In the power-on password section I input the current password and left the new password boxes blank. It said password unrecognised. I went to another part of the setup utility and checked that I was typing it correctly, the keys were working, and no modifiers keys were stuck. I tried it a few times. It never once said 'password changed' and I never once put anything in the new password boxes. At all. But now, when I boot it it asks for a password and doesn't accept the old password, or blank, or any other random guesses. Something similar to this happened to this exact same laptop before: it had a BIOS utility password instead of the power-on password, and there was an official HP utility that could reset it. It required the password in order to do this, but for some reason the password worked in that utility, but not at boot. This time is worse. It's the power-on password. I can't boot to run that utility. Here comes the worst bit. As you'd expect, the manual it of course has the usual section saying that to reset the password you can remove the CMOS battery, with detailed instructions on how to do that. It doesn't work. In fact, by looking around on the internet, it seems all nx6125 owners agree: removing or discharging the battery doesn't reset the BIOS passwords, no matter how carefully and complicated a way you choose to do it. So, uh, it's buggered. I have found two similar and one identical report of this problem on this laptop, only one stated a successful resolution: http://forums11.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/bizsupport/questionanswer.do?threadId=1010454"Finally, i tryed different solutions, without success, and i decided to to connect motherboard "eprom" to my desktop pc, SUCCESS i unlocked bios password, provenance problem is a Hp bios, work unnormaly" "the idea is to discharge through the back end of the adaptor any remaining voltage that is holding the CMOS memory." If anyone understands what those lines mean, or has another idea, let me know. Also helpful would be suggestions of hardware-type forums to post to where they might know something I can do. I'm too upset and flustered about it to even bother doing much googling for other people with the same problem. I can't think of any good search terms. | | Friday, March 30th, 2007 | | 12:28 am |

ottars
People have been asking me all day to give them otters, and I just watched a South Park episode where otters riding ostriches were plotting to destroy humanity in the name of science. Yaay! | | Wednesday, February 7th, 2007 | | 6:02 pm |

Was buying broadband and phone line for my mum online today. It's all very confusing, but we think we've got it sorted. While signing up for the broadband on http://www.ntl.com/ , there was a form asking when we wished it to be delivered. However, the drop-down boxes on that form only allowed you to choose delivery dates in 2006, and then upon sending the form the system complained about the date chosen not being at least 7 days in the future. Basically, it was impossible to continue. :'( Step in... Web Developer Toolbar! Yay! Changed the drop-down to a text-box and it was all sorted. As soon as that's delivered we're ordering a DualPhone 3800 (found it somewhere for £92 including delivery, shiny gifts for anyone who can find it (or similar) cheaper), which will allow her to make and receive calls without having the PC on. There's a £23 a year charge for a perfectly normal local area number. While signing up for the broadband we noticed an offer from Virgin Mobile, for a SIM-only pay monthly no-minimum-term-or-cancellation-fee contract: - 300 minutes to any UK mobile/landline - 300 texts ----"---- - £10 a month (usually £20) The only proviso is that should the contract with NTL be terminated, the price doubles back to its normal amount. Since my vodafone contract is coming up to its expiration, I think I may well take advantage of this. This means I'll need a phone (since my existing one is unbearable), so I'll be scouting around for a new phone, probably second-hand, in the £0-£50 range if not less. | | Monday, January 29th, 2007 | | 7:02 pm |
Random long pointless journal entry, DNR lol
OK. Last weekend but one there was a Swindon meet, to which about a dozen furs turned up (to my great surprise). I'm not going to post about that, so if you want to know then check that date on my friends page. Last weekend just gone we had another meet. Went to meet up on Friday after work, and had a fairly nice night at the pub with about ten or so furs, although I got tired quite quickly. On the encouragement of others some of us stayed there until about 0200, and then split up to back to individual houses, with the remainder of us crashing at my friend Steve's house. Saturday started around 1300 at the pub again, but at around 1830 I had to leave to go to work. While I was gone the others continued, among other things going to play Laserquest. I got back from work at about 0120, exactly as the furs were leaving the pub. Half a dozen of us went back to Ollie's place, where I'm sure we were a pain in the neck to his parents. On the Sunday I left fairly early with Draco and Hot Dave; whereupon we saw the wonders of Swindon, and watched Layer Cake on DVD, and then off to Essex via Kent for the other two. Went on IRC for a while, then went to sleep for about 15 hours. x.x Now that the time line has been set out, a few really random things. On Saturday night I had planned to go home with my dad, so he came to pick me up. However, when he got there, I begged him to take me into town instead, which turned out OK. He had brought my two brothers with him, so we had a pint or two while my shift was ending. My brother started talking about his current job as a proofreader -- I knew he had one, but not where or what -- and using a CAMRA leaflet to point out bad formatting errors. In the course of doing this he told us about some of the proofers' and editors' marks that are used -- most of which I already knew. Anyhow, it just struck me that it may have been somewhat heartless of me to demonstrate that I already know what some of the marks are, and what 'stet' means, and such things. c.c In other random news, I'm throwing away my large red backpack that has been with me through thick and thin ((game)). A pack of after-dinner mints I had in it had exploded, coating the bottom of the bag and all items located thusly. There was also some tearing down the side, and at the top (although no actual holes all the way through). To make matters worse, I opened the front compartment where I put medication, headache/pain/sleeping/caffeine tablets, and miscellaneous small items such as pens and my USB bluetooth adaptor; only to find that the rain had got in and the packets asploded, coating said items (including the USB bluetooth adaptor) in some kind of pain-relieving anti-depressing headache-eliminating sleep-causing sleep-depriving goo. There need to be more...
Synonyms for penis. I've already decided to use 'richard' and 'william' as much as possible for this week. For example: "Get your richards out! I want to see a line of williams chop chop." Should the circumstances arise such that I can use that exact line, I shall probably be quite pleased. ((EDIT: Oh, I guess I should theoretically mention that I am currently visiting blondie in Canterbury. I keep forgetting what journals and such are supposed to contain. Mmm, soy sauce.)) | | Monday, September 11th, 2006 | | 1:50 pm |
Rar!
Great weekend. Meet was fairly good. It was a little weird as I went in, as I didn't recognise the first ten or so people I saw, but upon entering (game) the room further I saw all the usual folks. Sadly, I didn't really get to know most of the people I hadn't met before. I definitely remember meeting three of them, one of whom's name I have forgotten; the others being Draco (another one!) and Malamute. I hope I got the spellings right. Misplaced mini-rant: My keyboard is sometimes inputting two spaces when I press it once. Also, the new headphones I ordered have arrived; I was getting a whining noise in the left bud with my old supra-aural headphones. However, with my new circumaural headphones, I get the same noise. It doesn't occur with the full-size speakers I have, and I'm not sure why. New sound card time, I guess. There was quite a bit of gaming at the meet, which is good. One particularly simple game became protracted though, and I got bored and wandered off. After this I alternately wandered about and collapsed on the sofa at the back, cuddling up with various assorted. Someone (TallOak or Sphelx seem to be likely candidates in my mind, but I don't really remember) noted that the pub was really quite noisy even though there weren't that many people there. Quite apart from the sporadic music and the louder games, I think they were right. Seems to me that there must be some architectural property of that room which reflects (or otherwise, through lack of furnishings, doesn't dull) noise. After the meet, rather than the usual trip to Namco, quite a group of us formed to away to delph_bunny/ leonerd's flat for food and gaming. Impressive cooking for dozen-or-so furs was very successful, with effectively four seperate meal options available; everyone seemingly satisfied, and even left-overs for later and next day (for those staying). As I often do, I hung around until pretty much everyone else had buggered off (one of the only good things about not having a job), and a great weekend continued on to the classification of fantastic (approximately). Hmm
Fuck. It just occured to me that when you put a name in brackets at the beginning of a sentence in brackets, it can look like that whole line is a quote, rather than a correction or clarification of a previous line. I'm so used to quotes beginning with , like pretty much every IRC client does. This explains a lot of what just happens. Fuck fuck fuck. This is like finding out you've mistakenly transferred the contents of your £20 bank account to a random person, then an hour later discovering you actually had your entire life savings in there.
Fuck. I am definitely going back to using the * or the ^ characters to correct or clarify previous lines. | | Thursday, February 2nd, 2006 | | 5:59 pm |
Holy cow.
I just got a spam advert mailing from the ZoneAlarm guys (I guess I must have used this email address once when downloading their free version of the firewall) ( Read more... )It reminds me of one of those films where the evil pharmaceutical company releases a plague which only they have the cure for. o.o BUY OUR PRODUCT OR ALL YOUR FILES WILL BE DELETED AND YOUR CHILDREN WILL Be DEFORMED. | | Wednesday, December 28th, 2005 | | 3:36 pm |

Woot!
I'm lying naked in bed on a laptop after soaking in the bath for a few hours. blondie is taking pictures of me. o.o My leg feels better, going to re-bandage it. It still looks awful, but oh well. I forgot to mention a couple of things in my meet report. Firstly, everyone will have heard me whinging about my leg pretty much all the time. Sorry. o.o;; Lastly, On the train back a group of five or six kids at one end of the carriage starting singing Happy Birthday to someone called Sarah. The rest of the carriage joined in, and applauded at the end. This was pretty normal. Then one of the kids started singing Jingle Bells. The next 45 minutes or so were filled with the entire carraige singing every Xmas song I know, and more besides. They even did the entirety of Partridge in a Pear Tree. I'm ambivalent about it. On the one hand, I mislike Xmas and everything associated with it. Also, it gave me a headache. However, it was really quite special and magical in a way. I'm used to drunken shouting and children screaming on trains. Dook alert! | | 10:39 am |
Meet!
Yesterday's meet was pretty awesome. I did drink even though I said I wouldn't, but I think I behaved myself OK. o.o Didn't do very much; arrived on the bus with Queue (whom I haven't seen in a while) at about 1300, and there was hardly anyone about! Picked up a lot later though when more people arrived, and I met all sorts of awesome furs like (to pick one at random who is imminently memorable) G G EuDraco. Also saw Leo (who missed the Cambridge meet to come to London, how lovely of him!) and Shaman (who missed the last one) and PK and DR and Andreus (both of whom are always lovely to see) and Emejn (whom I haven't seen in ages) and Sonic and Scorcher and Steve the bunny (all at their second meet, which was great. ^^). There were more people but their names escape me at the moemnt. Usual pub then DDR thing went on. I played DDR against all sense, afterwards my leg hurt a LOT. Then we went to Namco and chilled. Was nice there. Scorcher was being adorable. ^^ Left about 2100 to get my train, accompanied by Kurt. Was very nice to talk to him as I haven't really done that before. He seems very nice. :) Got back some time past 2300, got bandaged by a kitty, then went to sleep almost instantaneously. Thank you all! | | Saturday, December 10th, 2005 | | 8:12 am |
